Welcome to Birkenheüer, where we truly go "Beyond the First Look." I'm Declan, the artisan behind these one-of-a-kind pieces, created from a deep love for fine craftsmanship and the intrinsic beauty of wood. My mission is to infuse your everyday life with works of functional art, pieces that extend beyond practicality into an exploration of aesthetic appeal and character.

My background

From a young age, I've held an unwavering fascination for woodworking, a passion nurtured and refined through comprehensive training at Sheridan College's Bachelor of Craft and Design. My journey didn't stop there. Further courses in industrial design, woodturning, glass blowing, and more, have broadened my artistic horizons and allowed me to bring a versatile range of creations into existence.

My influences

From unique jewelry and bowls, practical kitchen utensils, and cutting boards, to captivating kinetic sculptures and custom furniture, my designs draw influence from a diverse array of influences. The simplicity and elegance of Scandinavian styles, the captivating grace of art nouveau, and the bold spirit of modern contemporary art all find their way into my creations. Combined with my own unique approach to Japanese Zuku Marquetry, they culminate in a distinctive symphony of patterns and contrasting species.

My philosophy

At Birkenheüer, every piece of wood is a treasure. Guided by my philosophy of sustainability and reverence for the material, no scrap is ever discarded. Instead, even the smallest offcuts are lovingly repurposed into smaller pieces like jewelry. This approach not only minimizes waste but also gives birth to unique, one-of-a-kind patterns and designs, breathing new life into every remnant and further enhancing the distinctiveness of my creations.

As a proud local artisan of Brantford, Ontario, every piece I create challenges traditional boundaries. They are all handcrafted with care and attention to detail in my own shop.
